CHOOSING BABY PUREES

The stores offer a a wide array of choices, and sometimes it is quite difficult for young mothers to make the right choice. There are several types of packages – low-end cardboard, metal cans with extended shelf life, glass jars allowing visual estimataion of the product, and the risk of undesirable impurities from the product packaging is minimized. However, you must pay attention and shouldn’t buy the product, if the package is damaged.

The first thing to pay attention to is that first complementary puree must include the components that grow in your climate and geographical area. In this case, risk of withdrawal syndrome can be minimized. Before putting the very first jar in your cart, check the expiration date and that the age of your baby corresponds to the recommended age of consumption. Make sure that the product contains no sugar, preservatives, colouring agents, chemical elements. The only preservatives permissible in baby’s purees are vitamin C and ascorbic acid.

Pay special attention to the additional labels on a jar. The product must not contain GMOs. Responsible manufacturer always indicates that the product does not contain milk protein, gluten, lactose, etc., and its has not been treated by ionizing radiation. For example, heat-treated purees are exposed to high temperatures. The product is not dangerous for the health, but the content of useful substances is almost minimal.

When opening the product, pay attention to the upper layer – there should be no clear signs of product oxidation, color of the top layer must be the same color as the main product. The smell must be characteristic of the corresponding product used in production, but not too intense. Excessively intense smell may indicate the use of additional preservatives and fragrances. Buying a canned puree, pay attention to the can damages, particularly, the dents. Do not buy such product, because due to a big damages, the internal “safe” layer can be broken, which leads to the oxidation of contents. When a glass jar is opened, a characteristic popping sound demonstrates its air-tightness. And, of course, before offering your baby some puree, taste it yourself. Neither taste nor smell should discourage you.

Moreover, when you choose a particular puree, remember general recommendations, such as that potato puree can cause allergies due to the high content of starch; cabbage and legumes purees lead to increased flatulency; fruit purees should be introduced after the vegetables, because fruits contain a lot of carbohydrates and glucose, which is undesirable for a growing baby’s body.
