INTRODUCTION OF SUPPLEMENTAL FEEDING

At normal feeding regimen, a child is breastfed since birth. It is recommended that you add new products not before 4 months. The average age of introduction of supplementary foods is 6 months, however, according to the pediatrician’s recommendations, this age can be slightly adjusted. It is not recommended to introduce solid foods before 4 months, because of the potential risk and negative consequences, which significantly predominate the potential benefits. The need for dietary diversity can be clearly demonstrated by a reduced tendency to body weight gain by the baby. Moreover, there are indirect signs that the child is ready to supplemental feeding – the infant already has teeth, he or she can sit, birth weight has doubled, the child is able to take food from a spoon by lips, as well as an increased interest to what grown-ups eat, conscious stopping to eat when feeling full.

There are three types of purees:

  1. Homogenized puree is ground almost until smooth
  2. Mushed puree – with consistency similar to porridge
  3. Roughly ground puree contains rather big solid pieces

Optimal first complementary foods are monocomponent (made from a single product) vegetable purees, for example: pumpkin puree, squash puree, broccoli puree, etc. New food must introduced very carefully. The first portion must be very small, just the tip of a teaspoon. Before feeding, heat the required amount to the required temperature in water bath or microwave oven, stir. Do not reheat the product.

After the first feeding, carefully monitor the baby’s condition. Special attention must be paid to the skin condition, whether any rash or redness appears, and watch the excretory system work. One of the two symptoms may indicate a problem of rejection. If such disturbances occur, feeding with puree must be stopped. If no withdrawal symptoms occur during the day, you can give the baby 1-2 teaspoons of puree during the next feeding. If digestion is normal, daily consumption of puree is 25-40 grams. If the baby’s organism assimilates vegetable purees well, you can try fruit puree, such as apple puree, banana puree, peach puree, etc. When the baby digests monocomponent purees well, multicomponent purees can be offered, for example, apples with peaches, apples with pears. Cereals and broth are to be introduced gradually. And only after these types of supplemental foods, you can start introducing meat purees rich in animal protein. Meat purees can be mono- and multicomponent, that is with the addition of cereals and vegetables. It should be noted that the average period of getting used to a certain kind of puree and normal consumption is 7 days.

Furthermore, at the age of 9 months, subject to the baby’s good response to the previously introduced purees, you can try a fish puree in the diet. However, please, note that fish is very allergenic.
